The sections below discuss each of these elements in turn.

Your introduction has two main purposes: 1) to give an overview of the main points of your thesis; and 2) awaken the reader’s interest. It’s not a bad idea to go through the introduction one last time when the writing is done, to ensure that it connects well with your conclusion.

Tip: For a nice, stylistic twist you can reuse a theme from the introduction in your conclusion. For example, you might present a particular scenario in one way in your introduction, and then return to it in your conclusion from a different – richer or contrasting – perspective.


Of course you write down the title, authors, year, volume and pages.

Writing a thesis means stating facts and your own observations on a topic. Mentioned below are two questions that your thesis proposal must cover.

There really are as many ways of presenting a Method section as there are methods in your field. Environmental engineering has so many areas each with its own way of doing research that we cannot go into details for all.

Also, make sure you include your own assumptions, a range of validity and highlight the limitations. When it comes to the citations for a thesis proposal, only data sources and descriptive procedures qualify. But keep it in mind that this is not the section where you are supposed to include results or any discussion related to the results.

Planning and Writing Materials and Methods/Experimental Techniques

Be clear and do not get too wordy. Especially in this section you should be as clear and concise as possible. Look at this example from Holtom and Fisher (1999). In a thesis a student had written:

Ideally, the section should cover approaches, procedures and the materials used for the thesis proposal. It must include all the techniques, calculations, a detailed description of the equipment used, procedures conducted and calibration graphs.

You do not have to reinvent the wheel; but, particularly with more specialised techniques, you should go into as much detail as the reader needs to be able to exactly repeat the process you used. The small variations in methodologies between laboratories are often important.
