While current artificial photosynthesis methods are far less efficient than the natural process, there has been continual progress in the field. One of the reasons that the technology is being pursued is that, compared to current solar panel technology, molecular nanoparticles are cheaper, lighter, and more environmentally sound. Aside from providing a renewable energy source and eliminating our reliance on rapidly diminishing fossil fuels, it has also been suggested that artificial photosynthesis on a large industrial scale could reverse global warming since the process consumes carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. With the potential of such beneficial impacts on the environment and our energy supply, continued research into combining nanotechnology and natural processes should remain a central goal.

The main benefit of artificial photosynthesis is to produce a hydrogen fuel that will be energy efficient and carbon neutral. It will be a renewable source of energy which can be used for transportation. It will not add any green house gases into the atmosphere. On the other hand, artificial photosynthesis may actually help to mop up large amounts of carbon dioxide from the air to produce liquid fuels.

Photosynthesis occurs inside chloroplasts. Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, a green pigment found inside the thylakoid membranes. These chlorophyll molecules are arranged in groups called photosystems. There are two types of photosystems, Photosystem II and Photosystem I. When a chlorophyll molecule absorbs light, the energy from this light raises an electron within the chlorophyll molecule to a higher energy state. The chlorophyll molecule is then said to be photoactivated. Excited electron anywhere within the photosystem are then passed on from one chlorophyll molecule to the next until they reach a special chlorophyll molecule at the reaction centre of the photosystem. This special chlorophyll molecule then passes on the excited electron to a chain of electron carriers.
