It was found that 3-nitrophthalic acid (1) was reduced to 3-aminophthalic acid (2) in the presence of 5% palladium-charcoal in glacial acetic acid under the atmospheric pressure at room temperature. 3-Acetylaminophthalic anhydrde (3) was synthesized in 90% yield (based on 1) by heating (2) in a mixture of acetic anhydride and glacial acetic acid. (3) was hydrolyzed to 3-acetylaminophthalic acid, mp 210211°C (dec.), in hot water.

Dinitration- not favored since addition of the nitro group highly deactivates the compound to any more reactions
Conclusion
The errors that might have occured in the experiment are not failure to maintain the temperature at specific steps in the procedure, and contamination of the reaction mixture
Overall, the product obtained did not gave a high percent yield but proved to be of high purity (proved by the melting point and results in chemical tests).
Thus, the synthesis of 3-nitrophthalic acid was a success.
Futher improvements may be done by the use of modern equipments for the setups.
