1-Bromobutane is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis and as a solvent for cleaning and degreasing. It acts as an alkylating agent as well as to prepare organometallic compounds such as n-butyllithium. It is also involved in the synthesis of procaine and tetracaine. It reacts with magnesium metal to prepare the Grignard reagent, which is used to form carbon-carbon bonds.

One Part of Chemistry: Synthesis of Tert-Butyl Chloride

The preparation of isobutylene-based ionomers through displacement of halide from brominated poly(isobutylene--isoprene) (BIIR) by triphenylphosphine (PPh3) and ,-dimethyloctylamine (DMOA) is demonstrated. While the resulting phosphonium and ammonium bromide salts (IIR-PPh3Br and IIR-NR3Br, respectively) possess dynamic mechanical properties that are comparable to thermoset vulcanizates, the elastomeric network is the result of ion-pair aggregation. Evidence of intra- and intermolecular aggregation provided by dynamic mechanical and dilute solution viscosity analyses is reinforced by studies of 1H NMR spin−spin relaxation, which demonstrate the reduced mobility of those polymer chain segments proximal to the phosphonium bromide functionality within IIR-PPh3Br.

Biogas mixtures include methane (which is useful), carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide (which can be a nuisance). To remove hydrogen sulfide from biogas, we conducted separation experiments using tetra--butyl ammonium bromide semi-clathrate hydrate (hereafter referenced as TBAB hydrate). TBAB hydrate is stable under atmospheric pressure and can cage gas molecules in their empty small cage. A solution of 10 wt % TBAB was enclosed in a pressure vessel with a gas mixture containing hydrogen sulfide, and then TBAB hydrate was formed in the solution by cooling. Because of the selective incorporation of hydrogen sulfide into TBAB hydrate, >90% of the hydrogen sulfide in the vapor phase was removed during the hydrate growth. We also determined that the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide was not dependent on the initial pressure or the cooling rate. The results showed that TBAB hydrate was an effective material for desulfurization.
