(2) Category 11 includes all non-skin contact or incidental skin contact products. Due to the negligible skin contact from these types of products there is no justification for a restriction of the concentration of this fragrance ingredient in the finished product.

This list is only indicative and should not be regarded as comprehensive. Maximum limits have been given. Variations to lower levels can result due to variations of species and time of harvest etc. It is recommended to base calculations on analytical data.

Eugenol and sodium fluoride were purchased fromSigma (St. Louis, MO, USA). Hydroxyapatite beads were obtained fromBio-Rad (Hercules, CA, USA). All other chemicals were of analyticalgrade and commercially available.

The bacterial adherence assay was performed asdescribed previously ().Briefly, 25175 was diluted in tryptic soy broth ata density of 10 colony-forming units (CFU) permilliliter. Human saliva was collected from an adult donor andclarified by centrifugation. Hydroxyapatite beads were treated withclarified human saliva and rotated at 7 × g for 1 h at roomtemperature. The saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads (S-HAs) werewashed three times with 0.01 M potassium phosphate buffer (pH 7.0).Bacterial suspensions with or without various concentrations ofadded eugenol were incubated with the S-HAs at 37°C for 90 min andthen the S-HAs were washed three times with potassium phosphatebuffer. The detached cells on S-HAs were dispersed, diluted andspread on Mitis Salivarius agar plates containing bacitracin (3.2mg/ml). The number of bacterial colonies was counted on each plateafter incubation at 37°C for 48 h and the CFU were thencalculated.

The limitations apply to Methyleugenol (ME) originating from all sources. Contributions from essential oils can be significant. Names of essential oils, which should also be considered in the application of the Standard, are given below. Maximum percentage of the reference material is included for use when no analytical data is available.

In this study, we firstly investigated theinhibitory effect of eugenol on acid production by 25175. The cells were treated with various concentrations ofeugenol and the pH was then measured. As shown in , the acid production wassignificantly suppressed by eugenol compared with the controlgroup.
