Jackee McNitt Engles provides executive coaching to the FEMBA and EMBA students at Anderson and teaches leadership in the EMBA program. In addition, she serves as Lead Faculty in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program, an initiative created through a partnership with Goldman Sachs, Babson College, and designated U.S. cities to provide instruction and support to small business owners on the cusp of growth. In her spare time, she teaches in the University of La Verne’s MBA and Masters in Leadership degree programs, and in the Cal State San Bernardino MBA program. In the past, she served as the Senior Director of Executive Management and Outreach Programs for the Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University, and as faculty in Claremont Graduate University’s (CGU) Community College Professional Leadership Certificate Program and UCI’s certificate programs in Human Resources and Business Management.

Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URSP)

A: One of the most important things you can do is to get to know your professors. You want to have letters of recommendation that tell us knowledgeably and personally about your qualifications and abilities. Your letters of recommendation should attest to the fact that you have the potential and mathematical background to be a research mathematician. It is already expected that all applicants to UCLA have a solid preparation in undergraduate math, with strong grades and GRE scores, that allows them at a minimum to pass our Basic Qualifying Exam in their first year. What we would also like to see in addition is that you have potential for advanced mathematical research. This can be demonstrated through courses that are heavy in proof oriented math, honors and graduate courses, a senior research project, a senior thesis, or a summer REU program.

A: The Statement is your opportunity to explain your reasons for pursuing graduate study in mathematics, and to let us get a sense of who you are. You may mention any relevant facts about your education or experience with mathematics that are not apparent in the other materials you submit. You might want to note what kind of mathematics you find interesting and wish to pursue in graduate school, and what you plan to do after obtaining a Ph.D. It may include information about your background, interests, or career goals, and how UCLA might help you meet those career and educational goals. There is no specific length, but one or two pages are typical.

The individual major must consist of at least 48 and no more than 60 upper-division units, a majority of which must be in departments offering a major in the College. If students have some unusual but definite academic interest for which no suitable major is offered at the University and have completed at least three terms of work (45 units minimum) at the University with a grade-point average of 3.4 or better, they may petition for an individual capstone major. The consent of the College Honors Programs and the assistance of a faculty adviser are required. Individual majors must be approved by the vice provost for Undergraduate Education.

Charles Garfield began his career in computer science after receiving two graduate degrees in mathematics from Adelphi University as well as induction into Pi Mu Epsilon, the National Mathematics Honorary Society, and later, the Adelphi University Alumni Academy of Distinction. Dr. Garfield worked as a computer analyst on Apollo Eleven, our first lunar landing. It was as a member of the team that sent the first two astronauts to the moon that he learned how mission-driven teams can band together to accomplish extraordinary results. He then continued his education earning a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of California at Berkeley prior to publishing ten books including the highly regarded peak performance trilogy on high achieving individuals, teams and organizations—Second to None, Peak Performers and Peak Performance. His honorary speeches include: Clinton White House conference; U.S. Olympic Committee and Head Coaches of Olympic Sports; and the Leadership of Oklahoma City following the tragic bombing of the federal building. Charles Garfield was an at-large member of the Board of Governors and is currently an instructor at the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. He serves on the editorial board of Greater Good, a national magazine from the University of California, Berkeley’s Center for Science and the Greater Good. He is also a founding faculty member of the Metta Institute (formerly Zen Hospice) end of life counselor training program.
