This course will suit those wishing to extend their knowledge of general polymer synthesis, or those interested in finding out more about the application of architecturally controlled polymers. This course builds on the module Controlled Polymer Synthesis in the Basic Polymer Science course, but is also accessible to those with a basic knowledge of polymer synthesis (gained as an undergraduate or through practical experience). It is envisaged that end users will be those working in (but not limited to) areas such as composites, drug delivery, paints and surface coatings, medical devices, adhesives, resins, commodity polymers, consumer products packaging, etc.

Synthesis and Polymer Technology

Many polymers are simple linear arrangement of monomers. However, in both the natural and synthetic world other architectures are key parameters that have important impacts on properties. The aim of this module is to introduce a range of polymers with alternative architectures. Although mainly covering the synthesis and properties of these molecules, this course will also describe some of the applications that can be exploited by the specific polymeric architectures. These will include applications in medicine, cosmetics, paints etc.
