Students demonstrate that a terrarium, a closed system, is an excellent tool for conducting environmental studies such as determining the rates of photosynthesis and cell respiration in plants. As part of this process, students:

An extremely important byproduct of photosynthesis is oxygen, on which most organisms depend....

Quick question about a photosynthesis lab I'm doing : …

Through reading various books and web pages it was made clear that carbon dioxide is definitely one of the raw materials needed for photosynthesis, but I wanted to see whether this is actually true and if carbon dioxide is taken away completely will the plant photosynthesize at all.

Photosynthesis mainly takes place in the palisade mesophyll cell in the leaves of plants.

It will be very interesting to see how light will influence the rate of photosynthesis in plants and what will happen if they do not get the required light in order to produce starch .

Plants produce carbohydrates as a result of Photosynthesis, predominately glucose.

This multi-part minds-on, hands-on activity helps students to understand both alcoholic fermentation and the engineering design process. In the first two parts of this activity, students learn about alcoholic fermentation and test for alcoholic fermentation by assessing CO2 production by live yeast cells in sugar water vs. two controls. The third part of this activity presents the bioengineering design challenge where students work to find the optimum sucrose concentration and temperature to maximize rapid CO2 production. Structured questions guide the students through the basic engineering steps of applying the relevant scientific background to the design problem, developing and systematically testing proposed design solutions, and then using initial results to develop and test improved design solutions. The photosynthetic production of oxygen by green plants is an important source of atmospheric oxygen, which most organisms –including plants themselves –require in order to complete their respiratory chains and obtain the energy for life....
