The virtual camera measures the exterior spectral radiance distribution at its position on the window. At the same time, the projection of the parallel light beams from the sky patches yields the average spectral irradiance of the entire window surface. Knowing this value and the window area, the total amount of spectral radiant flux that is to be transferred through the window can be calculated.

As previously noted, both the accuracy and execution time of DAYSIM is strongly dependent on the user-specified parameter values, as is evident from FIG. 3. Consequently, eight separate simulations were performed with different parameter settings for -ab, -ad, -ar, and -as, with each simulation being compared with the LICASO results. (Default values were used for all other DAYSIM parameters.)
Simply by looking at the isolux distributions, it is evident that setting -ad to 1000 and -as to 20 results in “splotches” of light. Raising these parameter values to 5,000 and 500, respectively, appears to resolve this issue, but at the expense of increasing the calculation time. (In this particular example, the DAYSIM calculation time increased by a factor of 6.5 times.)

any people asked why I used PAR (Photosynthetic Active Radiation) as a way of measuring the lamps as opposed to lux (a photography and media term used to measure light values). Also, many people wanted to know if their lux measurements could be translated into PAR values. In an effort to be as concise as possible on this topic, I'll state that PAR measurement is useful for a number of reasons, the primary one being that it measures the band of light (400nm-700nm) where photosynthesis can occur. A secondary reason is that the light is measured uniformly. Lux readings are geared toward the way humans see light, so greens and yellows are given a higher weight than purples and blues. PAR readings measure nearly the whole visible light spectrum, 400nm-700nm, evenly.

If you used a LUX or foot candle meter to measure the intensity of a horticulture lighting system, you would end up receiving different values depending on the spectrum of the fixture, even if the fixtures were providing the same PAR intensity to your crop. For example, if you took a measurement using a LUX or foot candle meter under a fixture using broad spectrum (i.e. white) light emitting diodes (LEDs) you would receive a much higher value than if you took the same measurement under a fixture with red and blue LEDs, even if both fixtures were providing the same amount of PAR. This will cause growers to miscalculate the actual amount of PAR they are delivering to their crop, which can lead to unfavorable growth and development. This is why lumens, LUX, and foot candles should not be used as metrics for horticulture lighting.

LICASO™ and DAYSIM are daylighting analysis software programs that perform climate-based annual daylight simulations, including the calculation of annual daylight metrics. This white paper compares their performance in terms of accuracy and calculation times.
