Instruments such as the and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), the New Zealand Priority Criteria for Major Joint Replacement, the Knee Society Score (KSS), or the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) scale should be examined in this regard.
The routine administration of prophylactic antibiotics for dental interventions to prevent haematogenous spread of infections to prosthetic joints is a contentious issue. There is a lack of robust evidence linking dental procedures to an increased risk of infection of prosthetic joints. Antibiotic prophylaxis has not been shown to effectively prevent dental-associated infections. Basically, there is no evidence to link prosthetic joint infections to dental procedures and none to prove that antibiotic prophylaxis is effective. Source:

Advances in TKR technology in the past 10 years have enhanced the design and fit of knee implants, resulting in improved short- and long-term outcomes.
Despite the increased success of TKR, questions remain concerning which materials and implant designs are most effective for specific patient populations and which surgical approach is optimal for a successful outcome.

There has been considerable discussion as to the influence of obesity on the indications for, and the outcome after, knee replacement. Although this is logistically, anaesthetically and surgically more difficult procedure, with additional risks involved, the functional outcomes of knee replacements in obese people appear to be satisfactory.

Contraindications: The physician’s education, training and professional judgement must be relied upon to choose the most appropriate device and treatment. Conditions presenting an increased risk of failure include: any active or suspected latent infection or marked local inflammation in or about the affected area. Compromised vascularity that would inhibit adequate blood supply to the fracture or the operative site. Bone stock compromised by disease, infection or prior implantation that can not provide adequate support and/or fixation of the devices. Material sensitivity, documented or suspected. Obesity. An overweight or obese patient can produce loads on the implant that can lead to failure of the fixation of the device or to failure of the device itself. Patients having inadequate tissue coverage over the operative site. Implant utilization that would interfere with anatomical structures or physiological performance. Any mental or neuromuscular disorder which would create an unacceptable risk of fixation failure or complications in postoperative care. Other medical or surgical conditions which would preclude the potential benefit of surgery. The T2 Ankle Arthrodesis Nail should NOT be used if following conditions are present: tibial malalignment of > 10˚ in any plane, severe vascular deficiency, osteomyelitis or soft tissue infection.

High-performance ceramics are biocompatible and bioinert. The ceramic material does not elicit any known allergic reactions. Case reports of hip and knee replacements have described significant improvement of symptoms and reduced levels of metal ions when revision is performed using ceramic components to address adverse reactions to components of metal implants.,,,,,
