The internal complexity of democratic discourse does not overcomethe problem of the application of the democratic principle tocontemporary social circumstances. As Habermas puts it,“unavoidable social complexity makes it necessary to apply thecriteria of democracy in a differentiated way” (Habermas 1996, 486).Such complexity restricts the application of fully democraticjustification for a number of reasons: first, it is not possible forthe sovereign will of the people by their democratic decision-makingpowers to constitute the whole of society; and, second, a societyformed by merely associative and communicative means of coordinationand cooperation is no longer possible. This objection to radicaldemocracy is thus directed to those theories that do not figure out howsuch principles can be institutionally mediated given current socialfacts. Indeed, institutional mediation can overcome deficits incommunicative self-organization, in so far as they compensate for“the cognitive indeterminacy, motivational insecurity, and thelimiting coordinating power of moral norms and informal norms of actionin general” (Habermas 1996, 323).

Prerequisite: SOCY 100. An examination of changing concepts of the interaction between the individual and society. The objective is to analyze the roles of the individual and society in the creation of and change in persistent social problems, such as poverty and social inequality. Analysis employs the framework of classical functional conflict and social constructivist theories, as well as the context of rapidly changing communication technology and globalization and their impact on the individual. Topics include the construction of social order; the role of trust in social interaction; and work, power, social organization, and the social self. Selected readings are taken from the sociologies of work, gender, modernity, postmodernism, globalization, and social change. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: BEHS 312, SOCY 311, or SOCY 313.

Roles represent sets of behaviours that are expected of employees. To understand how organizational roles develop, it is particularly informative to see the process through the eyes of a new employee. Starting with the first day on the job, a new employee is presented with considerable information designed to communicate the organization’s role expectations. Some of this information is presented formally through a written job description and regular communications with one’s supervisor. Hackman (1992), however, states that workers also receive a variety of informal communications (termed discretionary stimuli) designed to shape their organizational roles. For example, a junior school faculty member who is too vocal during a departmental meeting may receive looks of disapproval from more senior colleagues. Such looks are subtle, but communicate much about what is expected of a junior colleague.

General Systems Theory - StatPac

A foundation in the principles of marketing used to manage profitable customer relationships. The objective is to understand the pivotal role of marketing within both an organization's strategic plan and the marketing process and determine marketing strategies and tactics. Topics include consumer behavior, competitive analysis, segmentation, target marketing, positioning, branding, new product development, pricing, value chains, and marketing communications. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: BMGT 350, MGMT 322, MRKT 310, or TMGT 322.

Other areas of progress are also needed, particularly new methodological approaches in the psychological demand area. Also, more longitudinal studies are needed, methodological advances are needed to address self-report bias and new physiological monitoring technologies must be introduced. At the macro level, macro social occupational factors, such as worker collective and organizational level decision influence and support, communication limitations and job and income insecurity, need to be more clearly integrated into the model. The linkages to social class concepts need to be further explored, and the strength of the model for women and the structure of work/family linkages need to be further investigated. Population groups in insecure employment arrangements, which have the highest stress levels, must be covered by new types of study designs - especially relevant as the global economy changes the nature of work relationships. As we are more exposed to the strains of the global economy, new measures at macro levels are needed to test the lack of local control and increased intensity of work activity - apparently making the general form of the Demand/Control model relevant in the future.

The Program Manual provides a step-by-step activity guide for each EBS, and includes planning tools, sample materials, and resource guides. The CRUZA Toolkit is stocked with promotional and intervention materials that can be easily distributed to parishioners, such as: Bible bookmarks, parish bulletin inserts, spiritually-themed photo frames with health messages, birthday cards with reminders about age-appropriate screening guidelines, and bi-fold brochures that weaved family, faith, and health messages together. Toolkits contain local resource guides, including contact information for organizations willing to provide guest speakers, assistance with obtaining health insurance, and sources for additional health information and materials. Materials developed or translated by CRUZA are included on USB flash drives so parish leaders can tailor materials or print additional copies. Materials from MIYO are also included in the kit. Developed by health communications researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, MIYO enables individuals to customize small media and client reminders using an intuitive user interface and an extensive library of audience-tested images, messages and designs []. Table summarizes the EBS and how they are packaged in the Toolkit. All materials have been translated by certified Spanish translators and reviewed by investigators (MIT, HO, RN) for accuracy, literacy level, and cultural and religious appropriateness.
