In this module, we explore the development of feminist and queer theoretic conceptualizations of identity and how these conceptualizations relate to language. Drawing on foundational texts in philosophy, literary theory, sociology and cultural studies in addition to linguistics, we interrogate the position of women and men in society through the prism of linguistic practice, and work to develop a holistic account of the ways in which individual speakers negotiate social and ideological pressures in their construction and presentations of gendered and sexual selves. Students will gain hands-on experience in conducting original research on a sex- and/or gender-related topic, and special emphasis will be placed on linking academic research in this area to finding solutions for the real-world problems that women and men may face.
This module is compulsory and will be taught in term B. The module builds on statistical methods covered in the Data Analytics module in term A.
The aim of the module is to introduce students to the problem of causal inference, to theories of how causality is established and to empirical methods used to identify causal effects. The main focus will be on randomized controlled trials and settings that are similar. Students will learn about different econometric techniques used to identify causal effects and will develop an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of these effects. Students will also learn how to collect and organize data that comes from real or natural experiments, to analyze such data and to report on their results in ways that are accessible to non-specialists.

This module is only open to degree apprentices in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. It will introduce students to: Formal introduction to Project Management; Project Structure, Leadership and Team Roles, Communications; Project Scope, Feasibility and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS); Stakeholders and Quality Management; Project Risk, Decision Making, Estimating and the Business Case; A brief review of risk management and the risk management process; explain the legal basis of risk management; critically evaluate how pure risks may be identified, assessed and evaluated; discuss the role of human behaviour in managing risks; Review of the basic key techniques and tools to plan and control projects (e.g. work breakdown, Gantt charts, critical path analysis and managing risk); Introduction to other resources which can assist with project planning (e.g. Microsoft Project and PRINCE); Examples of different kinds of processes in different contexts.

'Intangibles' now make up about 80% of the value of many businesses. For small and medium sized businesses that percentage may be higher. These 'intangibles' include goodwill, customer connections and the like, but mainly they consist of intellectual property rights Â¿ a portfolio of trade marks or patents, the copyright in a suite of computer programs, a catalogue of musical recordings. These are all business 'assets' and how they are created, acquired, improved and used is the focus of this module.
The module is very practically focussed, examining how technology based and creative businesses and other organisations such as universities and research centres 'commercialise' or 'monetise' these valuable assets by licensing or franchising their IP or by engaging in other strategic commercial arrangements. It includes an examination of how businesses are bought and sold for their IP.
The module introduces students to working precedents - draft technology licences, M & A transactional agreements and similar working documents - to illustrate how lawyers in practice deal with these commercial arrangements. The module is of great potential value to students who are likely to find themselves working in a commercial environment either in private practice or as an in house attorney.

The module will cover a wide variety of topics in management studies and skills. It aims at helping students learn about the nature of managerial work and management skills: what does managerial work consist of, what are the key theories from organisation and management studies that relate to managerial work (e.g. power and politics, motivation and empowerment), what skills are required by managers (e.g. effective management of groups, communication skills), how has our understanding of managerial work changed over time and what are the implications in relation to responsible management practices? The revised module will cover some of the themes taught in the previous version of the module but also extend to a broader range of topics in management studies and skills that prepare our students for their role as (responsible) future managers.
