The effect of light on seed germinationWhat is Transpiration?

Photosynthesis consists of light-dependent and light-independent reactions.

Effect of different colors of light on the rate of photosynthesis.

Industrial societies manufacture huge quantities of goods. Once used, these products arecast away. Hence, on one hand we substract great amounts of resources from nature, on theother hand we make enormous heaps of garbage which pollute the environment. If you thinkof it, a lot of materials which are discarded could be reused. In fact, metals, plasticand glass can be used in manufacturing new items. Paper and fabric can be turned back intopulp and fibers, and reassembled into new products. Organic wastes of kitchen, usuallymade of vegetable and animal substances, and garden material, can be composted and used asfertilizer. Wood can be burned, yielding electrical energy, heat and carbon dioxide whichwill be used by other plants to produce more wood. Recycling of waste materials has thedouble advantage of reducing the need for raw materials, and the amount of rubbish.
Every day for a month, separate the different kinds of scrap of your home, weight them andwrite out a list. At the end, estimate the amount of materials which can be recycled, evaluate the recycling and waste management program of your community. Highlight theproblem areas of the system. Assess the problems created by not easily recyclable things, and by the polluting ones: paint cans, batteries, oils, detergents, medicines, etc. Bringout the difficulties and the questions facing particular problems in the recovery ofwastes. Ask the authorities of your city. Write a guide for families on how treat wastesin the right manner. Show this guide and the report of your research to your teacher.

How does light intensity and duration affect the rate of photosynthesis?

Effects of different colors of light on the photosynthesis rate.

Is because
the wants to show that the rates of photosynthesis will
vary according to how much light from a light bulb will be trapped in
the chloroplasts, in the leaf.

The energy derived from is used in particular pathways to achieve the final result of synthesis of sugars. Since the pathways are known, a theoretical maximum efficiency can be calculated. It is known that a total of 8 photons of light must be absorbed to reduce two molecules of +. Operating in the , the resulting two molecules of NADPH can produce one hexose molecule. The of a median energy photon at 600nm is 2.07 eV, and for 8 moles of such photons the energy absorbed is

Effect of Different Colored Lights on Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is responsive to certain wave lengths of light energy (see Fig. 7.3, 7.4 & 7.5, Pg. 110-111 in text). The visible spectrum, from Red to Violet light is effective in photosynthesis The most effective colors of light energy are in the Red and Blue/Violet range of the color spectrum. These are the wavelengths of light that are absorbed most strongly by plant pigments, particularly the PRIMARY (and dominant) pigment in photosynthesis, CHLOROPHYLL a.

Effect of colour of light on the rate of photosynthesis

In addition to Chlorophyll a, there are a number of other pigments concentrated within the membranes of the grana. These are called ACCESSORY PIGMENTS. All of these ACCESSORY pigments are responsible for capturing (absorbing) specific wavelengths (colors) of light energy and trasfering this energy to Chlorophyll a.

How do different colored lights affect photosynthesis

Considering that not all light energy is used for photosynthesis we propose an alternative hypothesis. In a previous experiment the pigment xanthophylls absorbed significant amounts of blue light. In new research it is found that this pigment could be an important component in a process called energy dissipation rather than photosynthesis. In order to not overwhelm the plant with photosynthesis and respiration, this photon energy goes to other functions or formations of the plant. Further research on the function of xanthophylls will need to be conducted in order to understand the processes of plant function.

Transcript of How do different colored lights affect photosynthesis

In this exercise, students at different tables varied the intensity of light responsible for photosynthesis in the spinach disks by varying the wattage of the bulbs. Recall that these disks were submerged in a sodium bicarbonate solution and subjected to a vacuum. This resulted in the utilization of carbon from the sodium bicarbonate as their primary source of carbon for photosynthesis (as opposed to carbon dioxide). The reasoning behind this is that the sunken disks in solution will produce oxygen as a product of photosynthesis and float to the surface. We should be able to count the number of disks as a representation of the rate of photosynthesis occurring in each experimental setup.

Light, temperature & CO2 are known as limiting factors, and each is as
important as the next in photosynthesis.
