In this version of the synthesis, the alkylation process is followed by a samarium(II) iodide-promoted reductive cleavage of the cyano group. Perceived advantages of this approach are that the ester remains intact and is not hydrolyzed to the corresponding carboxylic acid, and that other functional groups can be tolerated under the mild, nearly neutral reaction conditions.
