10.2 Characterization of Ultrathin Polymer Films and Polymer Brushes.

In situ emulsion polymerization was employed for synthesizing carbon nanotube (CNT) composites in a colloidal system with poly(styrene) or PS to form nanostructured brush. CNTs were initially functionalized with oleic acid, followed by silanization with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane to impart cross-linking properties. Styrene monomers were efficiently grafted to surface modified CNT via emulsion polymerization with variable CNT concentrations. FTIR analyses of the functionalized CNT and PS/CNT composites confirmed the bond formation and effectiveness of the developed experimental method. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the desired bonds and the composition of the composites. Structural properties of the composites characterized by TEM confirmed excellent deagglomeration and dispersion of CNTs in PS/CNT composite. Thermal characteristics from TGA and DSC data showed enhanced properties for the nanocomposites as a function of the CNT content. BET measurements indicated significant improvements in surface area and pore volume with enhancements in gas sorption for the polymer nanocomposites.

Surface analysis showed conversion of brush saccharide precursor chemistry to the desired sulfonated polymer product. The sulfonated polymer brush surface was further analyzed using three conventional in vitro tests for blood compatibility-plasma recalcification times, complement activation, and thrombin generation. The sulfonated polymer brush films on silicon oxide wafers exhibited better assay performance in these blood component assays than the unsulfonated sugar functionalized polymer brush in all tests performed.

N2 - The CoIII-salen-catalyzed (salen = N,N'-bis(salicylidene) ethylenediamine dianion) hydrolytic kinetic resolution (HKR) of racemic epoxides has emerged as a highly attractive and efficient method of synthesizing chiral C3 building blocks for intermediates in larger, more complex molecules. HKR reaction rates have displayed a second order dependency on the concentration of active sites, and thus researchers have proposed a bimetallic transition state for the HKR mechanism. Here we report the utilization of pendant CoIII-salen catalysts on silica supported polymer brushes as a catalyst for the HKR of epichlorohydrin. The novel polymer brush architecture provided a unique framework for promoting site-site interactions as required in the proposed bimetallic transition state of the HKR mechanism. Furthermore, the polymer brushes mimic the environment of soluble polymer-based catalysts, whereas the silica support permitted facile recovery and reuse of the catalyst. The polymer brush catalyst displayed increased activities over the soluble Jacobsen Co-salen catalyst and was observed to retain its high enantioselectivities (> 99%) after each of five reactions despite decreasing activities. Analysis indicated decomposition of the salen ligand as an underlying cause of catalyst deactivation.
