ASSESSMENT TASKS MUST BE SET IN A VARIETY OF CONTEXTS, BE ENGAGING TO STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT INTERESTS AND EXPERIENCES, AND MUST NOT ASSUME THE PERSPECTIVE OR EXPERIENCE OF A PARTICULAR GENDER, RACIAL, OR ETHNIC GROUP. The requirement that assessment exercises be authentic and thus in context increases the likelihood that all tasks have some degree of bias for some population of students. Some contexts will have more appeal to males and others to females. If, however, assessments employ a variety of tasks, the collection will be "equally unfair" to all. This is one way in which the deleterious effects of bias can be avoided.

The teacher can select from the full table the sections that apply to the learners in their classes and copy those sections into individual checklists. The name of the individual learner can be written at the top of the sheet, and the date that the assessment is carried out should also be written on the checklist. It is also possible to use a single checklist to record progress over time towards achieving an objective by having a series of ratings and date columns.
These methods, like all types of performance assessments, require that students actively develop their approaches to the task under defined conditions, knowing that their work will be evaluated according to agreed-upon standards.

At the end of a lesson, teachers try to devise assessments that reflect the kinds of activities and skills used in the lesson, and that focus on deep understanding of larger issues rather than small details. Multiple choice items are used much less frequently, and when used, are often two-tiered. The first item is a content question (e.g, Where does most of the weight of dry wood come from, a) soil, water, & sun, b) CO2, water & sun)? The second item is a reason question (e.g., The reason this is true is because a) this is what the plant needs to grow, b) these are converted into sugar in photosynthesis, c) a gas couldn't possibly make up the weight of a tree).
