LabBench Activity Cell Respiration

The fact that you’re even considering taking the AP Biology exam means you’re smart, hard-working, and ambitious. The test doesn’t have to be stressful if you remember some key facts about atoms, molecules, biochemistry, cells and cell cycles, and plants and animals.

This activity has been entirely revised to help students develop a sophisticated understanding of the basics processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. New sections develop student understanding that the (1) products of photosynthesis are used not only for cellular respiration, but also to synthesize plant molecules and (2) photosynthesis can increase plant biomass and cellular respiration can decrease plant biomass, so changes in a plant’s biomass depends on the balance between photosynthesis and cellular respiration. An answer key is now available for this activity.

Use an oxygen sensor, a carbon dioxide sensor, and a temperature sensor to demonstrate that a terrarium, as a closed system, is an excellent tool for conducting environmental studies and to design additional investigations on photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

Interphase consists of G1, S, and G2 phases (growth 1, synthesis, and growth 2). M phase consists of mitosis (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase) and cytokinesis. Mitosis results in the division of a parent cell into two genetically identical daughter cells.

Investigation 5 - photosynthesis (AP biology) - Duration: 12:55

Students demonstrate that a terrarium, a closed system, is an excellent tool for conducting environmental studies such as determining the rates of photosynthesis and cell respiration in plants. As part of this process, students:
