Sol-gel synthesis of nano-crystalline alumina powder by an alkoxide route is investigated and several subsequent processing techniques, such as emulsification, seeding and spray drying techniques are used to improve the powder characteristics. It is noticed that the nano-structured gel undergoes coarsening after calcination at elevated temperature. Seeding of the sol with nano-crystalline a-Al2O, powder is observed not only lower the phase formation temperature but also control the sizc of the calcined powders. The emulsification process can also be used effectively to control the morphology and size of the particles. The spray drying of the sol is observed to yield micrometer sized alumina powder, which can be used dircctly for the spray coating after calcination. During calcination, the hollow sphcrc obtained in the spray drying forms ring shaped powder.

You can use less than 200-proof ethanol in the synthesis of the gels but not in the solvent exchanges to prepare the gels for supercritical drying unless it is anhydrous ethanol and does not contain ketones or aromatics. You can use acetone for the gel purification steps instead if that’s easier.

more complex problem due to its susceptibility for hydrolysis as well as to the phase
transitions accompanying the thermal breakdown of the ordered structure.

AB - Abstract: Alumina nanofibers were prepared by sol–gel template method. Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) of feather-like morphology obtained by chemical vapor deposition of C2–C4 hydrocarbons mixture have been used as a template. The distinctive feature of CNF is a friable disordered structure consisting of separate fragments of graphite-like phase. To simplify the sol–gel synthetic procedure, the impact of preparative conditions such as type of precursor and ratio of starting components was studied. CNFs were coated with corresponding alumina precursor and subjected to a high temperature treatment. The resulted alumina nanofibers were explored by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), physical nitrogen adsorption (BET), and X-ray diffraction. The optimal Al2O3:CNF ratio was found to be 1:6. According to SEM and BET, surface area of prepared alumina fibers 70–90Â nm in diameter lies in a range of 149–174Â m2/g. The thermal and strength properties of epoxy composites reinforced with alumina nanofibers are compared.
