Hyperaldosteronism is a condition where too much aldosterone is produced by the adrenal glands.

The Interplay between Estrogen and Fetal Adrenal …

To date, only one study has investigated whether soy isoflavones can alter DNA methylation patterns []. This study found that exposure to genistein resulted in hypermethylation of six CpG sites in the agouti mouse genome, which decreased the incidence of adult-onset obesity. ER-α, which has been shown to play a role in adrenal gland development and function, has at least eight promoters that contain CpG islands and are thus tightly regulated by DNA methylation []. Thus, it is possible that by regulating DNA methylation isoflavones as well as other environmental estrogens may be able to modulate adrenal gland growth and development.

Eventually, the adrenals are totally exhausted. In this stage, the line between Adrenal Fatigue and clinical Addison's disease can be blurry.

Studies examining maternal adrenalectomy have revealed that the absence of maternal adrenal gland causes a substantial reduction in plasma cortisol and estrogen levels. These endocrine disruptions activate the fetal pituitary gland to secrete adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) [–]. Upregulation of ACTH promotes fetal production of corticosteroids (i.e., DHEA and DHEA-S) from the fetal adrenal cortex, which serve as substrates for placental endocrine production (). Under these conditions, the fetus is placed under stress and its fetal adrenal cortex takes over at least part of the maternal adrenal function. In a study investigating Sprague-Dawley rats, plasma DHEA-S levels of adrenalectomized dams rose from very low levels at 18 days of gestation to levels that were substantially higher than those of sham rats on 21 days of gestation []. This finding suggests that there is a critical factor that compensates for the lack of maternal corticosteroid production. Based on the available evidence, we suspect that the fetal adrenal cortex is the primary modulator of these effects. However, further studies need to be conducted to support this hypothesis. Moreover, research is required to determine whether maternal adrenalectomy has long-term effects on offspring's neuroendocrine system that controls reaction to stress, digestion, immune function, mood and emotion, sexuality, energy storage, and/or expenditure.

Isocort and Glandulars would be used to treat mild cases of Adrenal Fatigue. Although adrenals may not respond to these and HC may be needed.

This condition was seldom considered as a dysfunctional sickness. Instead, people think of Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome as a condition related to stress. Thus, the solution was to tell the person to "relax" and take anti-depressants. This does not solve the underlying issue and over time, the condition worsens. Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome is not a medical condition recognized by mainstream institutions. Invariably, the adrenal glands are structurally normal. Low cortisol, the most common associated finding, may be caused by factors outside the adrenal glands.

Most hormones in the adrenal gland need co-enzyme A for production. Co-enzyme A is a product of vitamin B5

It is interesting to note that most post-menopausal women who are experiencing hair loss have an adrenal problem. Hair loss is a sign of excessive androgens. Some women produce too much androstenedione, which then gets converted into estrone and testosterone. Testosterone in turn is converted into DHT. DHT is the more potent form of testosterone responsible for excessive hair loss. Estriol can be given to offset the testosterone effects as estrogen balances testosterone in the body.

Cortisol can be considered when closely supervised and used for a short period of time. It keeps the adrenal glands from getting stuck in the androgen part of the stress cycle if indeed it is in that state. Cortisol also complements the use of progesterone as well. The effective cocktail therefore consists of estriol, cortisol and progesterone. Each of these hormones, especially cortisol, has their own side-effects. Knowing what to use and when to use is critical, or hair loss could worsen.

Until the pituitary and adrenal glands recover, the body does not respond normally to stress such as illness by increasing cortisol production. As a result people who suffer with ‘flu’, fever or nausea may have to double the oral dose of the glucocorticoid when they are sick. However, this increased dosage should only be used for 1–3 days. On occasion, people can suffer vomiting or severe diarrhea that prevents them from absorbing the glucocorticoids taken by mouth.

Any serious attempt to normalize this axis should consider adrenal recovery as the first step. Adrenal normalization should precede hormone modulation. The adrenal glands deal with the daily stresses of life. A woman must normalize her adrenal glands to have a total body hormonal balance. Replacing deficient hormones alone without addressing the health of the adrenal gland is a band-aid approach. It is often ineffective in the long run. The normalization process can begin with investigating and eliminating stressors. Stressors are often chronic in nature. They can be related to lifestyle, dietary, mental, and inflammatory causes. Women with heavy menstrual bleeding and adrenal exhaustion can normalize their adrenal function with natural compounds. Only consider Exogenous cortisol replacement as a last resort because of its long term negative effects.
